Vox Nihili is a show which explores -our position in the architectural space of society. Drawn by mystery, we are blinded by the illusion of meaning and caught in the trap of the absurd. Vox Nihili brings to stage philosophical ideas such as panopticism, the duality of the absurd and the layering created by heterotopic spaces. The narrative unfolds through the sequence of visual tableaus created between the performers’ bodies and the objects in space. The essence resides in the localisation of the individual in relation to the structure of the society.

The project’s starting point is the idea of place. Drawing from different definitions, writings, and philosophies, the choreographer researched the principles of utopias, dystopias and heterotopias. Most interesting fact is that heterotopia represents the duality of the place which is half fiction half real, opened and closed, concentrated and dispersed, near and far, present and absent. Heterotopia has the power to juxtapose multiple spaces in one place. Based on this, he discovered principles of motion and visual images created by the bodies in space. Thus, he sought methods to portray aspects that are humane, but at the same time susceptible to organic alteration. Often, the dancers reacted impulsively to the directions given by the choreographer and the compositional logic created the structure at a later stage.

Moreover, another source of inspiration was the principle of panopticism, a disciplinary system of the population through maximum visibility and minimal communication, where the individual becomes the subject of his own judgment. Also, another important part of the process is the paradox of the absurd, which says that human beings are caught in a constant attempt to derive meaning from a meaningless world. The choreographer is drawn by this debate of contemporary art, where he
believes it is very easy to lose the value of meaning. Hence the title of the show, Vox Nihili, which describes a totally useless or meaningless statement.

The show is produced under the sixth edition of RAP (Residences, Workshops, Public). RAP is organized by the National Dance Center in Bucharest (NDCB) in partnership with the Paintbrush Factory in Cluj-Napoca and ColectivaA, co-funded by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund.
