Amprenta Mădălina Dan - All that mattered
All that mattered
October 28, 7.30 p.m.
Concept/performance: Mădălina Dan, Sergiu Matiș
Length: 2h 40 min
Credits: A production of the Festival for Performing Arts Timișoara supported by Rumänisches Kulturinstitut Berlin and Tanzfabrik Berlin
“All that mattered” is the first project inviting Mădălina Dan and Sergiu Matiș to work together. The starting point is their common history: they both attended choreography secondary schools, Mădălina in Bucharest, Sergiu in Cluj, they both participated in school ballet competitions and spent their teens during the 1990s in a post-communist and transitioning Romania. All this personal background of secondary school recollections and unrecoverable intensities gives rise to a performative conversation on how they see art and the current cultural and geo-social-political context. Employing various strategies to navigate personal archives, the project aims at answering one question: how and to what extent does the past impact the present?
The “Sleeping Beauty” ballet provides a full-length framework for the work of the Romanian dancers Madalina Dan and Sergiu Matis, who tear holes in the lushness of the classical ballet in order to get nearer to their own ballet history. The discrepancy between social realities in Romania in the 1990s, and the floridly opulent majestic fairy-tales in most ballets which Madalina Dan and Sergiu Matis learnt as trainee dancers cover version of “Sleeping Beauty”.
Sergiu Matiș, born in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, began his professional career at the Tanztheater Nuremberg. He has been living in Berlin since 2008, working with choreographers such as Colette Sadler, Yossi Berg, Philip Bergmann, Daniel Kok, and Jee-Ae Lim. He dances and works in several choreographies of Sasha Waltz & Guests (Dialoge: Neues Museum and MAXXI, Continu, Matsukaze, and Sacre). In 2014 he completed his Master’s degree Solo / Dance / Authorship (SODA) at HZT Berlin and received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation. His choreographies (Human Nature, Landing, ThreeDoors. Search, 89. Grenzenlos, Ending-dong, doom room, Duet, Keep it real, Explicit Content) have been shown internationally in Radialsystem / Berlin, Kinitiras Studio / Athens, eXplore Dance Festival / Bucharest, European Festival of Performing Arts Timișoara / Romania, International Festival dance.movement.theatre Gheorgheni / Romania, The National Dance Centre in Bucharest, Hebbel am Ufer Berlin, Antistatic Festival / Sofia, and Impulstanz Vienna.
All the shows, performances and artist talks scheduled to take place in Mădălina Dan’s ”Amprenta” will take place at the Stere Popescu hall on Mărăşeşti Bld. 80-82, with the exception of the “Agency of Touch” performances scheduled between October 23 and October 25 and hosted by the Moses Rosen Home, on Jimbolia Street no. 105.
The entry fee for the shows is 25 lei (full price) or 15 lei (reduced), while admission to the artist talk is free.
Tickets can be purchased online from www.kompostor.ro or from the Stere Popescu hall before the show.
Between October 17 and November 20, the National Centre for Dance in Bucharest will host the performances, shows and artist talks in the “Amprenta” project, one of the three directions of Mădălina Dan’s curatorial program as associate artist of the National Centre for Dance in 2016.
”Amprenta” will include the choreographer and dancer’s most recent works, but also older shows and collaborations. Initiated by CNDB in 2008 and updated on the occasion of Mădălina Dan’s curatorial mandate, the “Amprenta” project implies inviting a choreographer to execute a self-portrait over the course of approximately one month: presenting his or her own shows and also inviting productions or artists that form part of his creative universe.
