Towards the gaze and the meaning :: works by Cristiane Bouger (USA) >> May 10-15th

Cristiane Bouger (1977 in Curitiba, Brazil; lives and works in New York, USA) develops work in the fields of performance art, installation, contemporary dance, experimental theater, text and video to engage in a discourse intertwining body, biography, culture and politics.

Her hybrid performance works include the performance-installation Red A Hundred 40/Vermelho 140 (Casa Hoffmann's Fellows Project, in 2003; 13th Panorama RioArte de Dança, in Rio de Janeiro, 2004), Sensuality in (and) America (CB's Gallery Lounge, New York, 2004), Walk East – Chapter I (Dixon Place, New York and ACT – Ateliê de Criacão Teatral, Curitiba, 2007), Displacements Pills – Este Regalo Es Tuyo (ongoing project in Curitiba and New York), Chicken Piece (New York, 2009) and Hunger Follies – Scratch #1 (Anthology Film Archives, New York, 2010).

Bouger’s video performances and the documentary Community, Activism and the Downtown Scene – an independent documentary about the experimental scene in New York (2006) have been screened in several independent circuits in Brazil. Internationally, she has had her video work selected to integrate the 9ème Festival des Cinémas Différents, in Paris (2007), the program of the dance festival In-Presentable 08, in Madrid (2008), the Montage Video Dance Festival, in Johannesburg (2008), the ACE Film Festival, in New York (2008) and The New Filmmakers Series – Latino/ Anthology Film Archives, in New York (2010).

She had her work invited to be part of Circuitos Compartilhados (2008), a 35-DVD collection about the contemporary video art in Brazil (curatorship by Newton Goto). In 2009, Bouger was invited by the art critic Paulo Reis to have her video performance Red A Hundred 40 at the exhibition O Corpo na Cidade – Performance em Curitiba, at Centro Cultural Solar do Barão in Curitiba and at Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro – MAM-Rio.

She was a collaborating writer for PERFORMA 09 – The Third New Visual Art Performance Biennial, in New York and a contributing writer for Movement Research's Moving Dialogue: A Bucharest/New York Dance Exchange, in 2010. In the last decade she had nearly 30 articles and interviews published in books, magazines, journals and newspapers in Brazil, the United States, Portugal and England.

Bouger is a member of the collective Couve-flor.
