Lights, Tights & Realness - video presentation and talk by Ben Pryor >> Friday, October 8th, 17h00 - 20h00, Mediatheque

What is Dance in New York? Downtown? Modern? Contemporary? How does it happen and where does it go? Lights, Tights & REALNESS is a discussion concerning contemporary dance in New York City, making and touring work in the US and AMERICAN REALNESS, a festival of contemporary performance calling attention to the proliferation of new choreographic practices redefining the identity of American dance and performance.

The discussion introduced by Cosmin Manolescu will feature a speach by Ben Pryor, video excerpts from the performance works of Miguel Gutierrez, Ann Liv Young and others. David White, director of "artventuresnewhamshire" and former director of "Dance Theater Workshop", who is also visiting Bucharest as a special guest of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, will also participate to the discussion.

The video presentation and the talk are organised in the frame of a residence ofered to Ben Pryor by the "Gabriela Tudor Memorial Exchange Program" an initiative of the Gabriela Tudor Foundation in Bucharest and CEC Artslink in NYC, aiming to strengthen cultural exchange and collaboration between managers and artists from Romania and the United States. Created with the additional support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Bucharest and New York and the foundation "Trust for Mutual Understanding", the fellowship program is dedicated to the memory of Gabriela Tudor, who contributed immeasurably to the development of a livelier and more international Romanian art scene.

This year’s Gabriela Tudor Fellows are Irina Cios from Bucharest, art critic, curator and director of the International Center for Contemporary Arts (ICCA) in Bucharest and Ben Pryor, an independent arts manager, producer and curator operating under the moniker tbspMGMT. Ben's current projects include working with Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People, Trajal Harrell, luciana achugar, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Yvonne Meier and Wally Cardona. Ben is also the Producer and Curator for American Realness, an annual festival of contemporary performance in New York City. Previously Ben worked as Director of Operations for Center for Performance Research, an Artist Representative at Pentacle, a project manager for Chez Bushwick and in the Planning and Development department at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Ben served as chair of the Agents Council and Trustee for Dance USA from 2008-2010. Pryor’s residency in Romania will mediate an encounter with the Romanian dance community, and the exploration of the cultural scenes in the cities of Bucharest, Cluj and Bacău.

The event will close with a glass of wine offered by Gabriela Tudor Foundation. The presentation at the CNDB is organised in conection with “Moving Dialogue”, a Romanian – American dance exchange that will take place in New York between October 16 – 31.
