Bucharest International Dance Film Festival #5 at CNDB

The fifth edition of Bucharest International Dance Film Festival, the only Romanian manifestation dedicate to dance films, is taking place between the 4th and the 8th of September in Bucharest.

The theme of the 2019 edition is The Network, marking a new phase of development of the festival, by integrating films of various genres (made by film directors, choreographers, visual artists, animators, musicians) into the official programming, for various categories of audiences, as well as starting a special film project: a development lab featuring scripts for feature films that are in the first phase of creation.

BIDFF #5 takes place at Cinema Elvire Popesco, Cinema Muzeul Țăranului, The National Center of Dance Bucharest, LINOTIP - Centru Independent Coregrafic, but also in unconventional places as Fabrica Gastropub and Apollo 111.

The complete schedule of the festival can be accessed here:

BIDFF, in partnership with The National Center of Dance, organizes 3 unique events on the 4th, 6th and 7th of September.

cine(dans)concert with archive films and Karpov not Kasparov

Program curated in partnership with Arhivele Dansului: deschis pentru (re)inventar(e)!, project initiated by CNDB and co-financed by AFCN. Curators: Corina Cimpoieru, CNDB Archives official, and Bogdan Movileanu, editor. Film materials from the ANF Archive.

Wednesday, 4.09.2019, 21:00 hours, 45 min, free entrance

The unique selection of 16 archive films discovers the different histories of dance in niche areas of the Romanian film genre.

Ephemeral states of dance in sync with the "new media" of the silent film in the 20’s can be seen in the choreographic sketches performed by Elena Penescu Liciu (first ballerina at the Opera in Cluj), next to the ballet group of the Cărăbuș Theater, in the comedy "Lache in harem" (1928, directed by Marcel Blossoms).

The "artistic timeliness" of the dance is popularized in Romanian newspapers, screened in cinemas before feature films. Performances such as the one of Japanese dancer Masamy Kumy, of the American Ballet Theater Aaron Copland or the London Burre Fantasy ballet group are part of a collage of international recitals that can be seen, as a premiere, during the screening night of cine(dance)concert.

One of the best synth-pop/dance/electronic export bands in Romania, Karpov not Kasparov has performed, in recent years, throughout Europe, from clubs to big festivals. Their music is reminiscent of the 80’s disco with an optimistic and danceable sound. This year, Karpov not Kasparov accepted BIDFF’s invitation to arrange a cine concert based on the films in the CNDB Archive.

BIDFF Official Competition (Romanian Shorts)

Romanian filmmakers and choreographers meet this year in the complicated web of the self. The Corporealities off competition selection is made up of five very special films, whose authors have decided to embark on an ever-fascinating journey through the infinite territories of human experience. With each film, we discover a new type of physical language, created especially to awaken the spectator's emotion to a level that no other art, except dance, touches. There’s no surprise that the dance films in the program cover a variety of emotions and situations that range from the bitter experience of solitude to the hyperactivity in the modern jungle of finances, from family relationships and generation gaps to post-internet communities.
